  • Adds a CYA disclaimer on first visit. Nothing huge, just "I'm not a felon nor a child" type shit.

  • Maybe hit up ricecutta? Dude's manuals are phenomenal

  • Read the docs (they say yes).

  • It's really cool that PA6 rings like aluminum when it's bone dry, but it's definitely not its most impact-resistant state.

  • Exactly this. I've suffered creep, but only on unannealed nylons, only over long periods of time (talking months to a year), and only in a case like the thin FCG cage of the SF5 lower where the hammer pin moved forward enough to cause binary fire with a slow trigger release. If you're familiar with that particular failure, you understand that even a millimeter of misalignment can cause that to happen.

That gun's super safe. So periods of high heat, high spring pressure, rapid movement, and thin walls came together to cause that failure.

  • I've edited the post language -- clearly I need to research more about right-to-repair, as it seems to not necessarily be a subset of open-source as I'd thought and I certainly don't want to misconstrue the facts.

  • You do need to file the Form 1, but nobody's gatekeeping the design docs from you.

Every part of the suppressor is the registered part. Suppressor parts are suppressors, legally speaking, even if they don't physically have the serial stamped on them.

  • Really excited for my F1 SBR to come back so I can do up a sick DeAR.

  • You are going to make a shrapnel bomb.

That said, testing whether this makes a shrapnel bomb now costs $0. Do not take this to a populated public range, demo it somewhere safe with adequate PPE and a gun on a string.

  • [firmly tapping the sign]

If I'm gonna keep a public forum up, I need you guys to not run around and blatantly tell each other to commit felonies, alright?

  • Yeah this site blows ass lmao. But if you're like me and you stay up until the wee hours of the morning, it works pretty consistently.

  • What? Not too fond of people saving the hearing of themselves and those around them? Or are you a real big fan of government overreach and unnecessary regulation for the purpose of oppression of the lower class?

These things were thousands of dollars before. The only thing they kept out was the poor. Are they not entitled to their hearing?

  • I don't think they're gonna do shit. I think they're wondering why half of their queue right now is potatoes from people memeing.

Even if they did regulate thread adapters, we'd just do direct-thread printed 1/2x28. It wouldn't be as good but it'd be alright.

  • Unfortunately this is one of those things that's still in flux. As of right now, the F1 registration process is still going to demand your CLEO's info.

    Wiki's been updated.

  • If we keep that pace the whole year, we'll have enough cans to stretch the majority of the Nile.

I really wanna see these things everywhere, man.

  • Double-check the FTN docs -- wanna say they touch on that.

January 1st is Here; Make a Fucking Suppressor

For those in the US, the BBB has now kicked in and the tax cost for filing a Form 1 has dropped to $0. The only thing stopping you from building your own suppressor (or SBR!) is paperwork.

Do it, you owe it to yourself to have dozens of these things. They're basic hearing protection devices; don't let anyone tell you any different. File more Form 1s than you have guns and build them all out. Here's what you need to know:

    1. How to file a Form 1. See our fresh new wiki's guide on that or OpenPew Project's slick website for more (he wrote the guide on the wiki, too -- go give him love). You'll need to do your prints, which is easily done through OpenPew's site for a small cost or via free methods detailed in the aforementioned guides.
    2. Where to find a can to print. Here are [the most popular des
  • That's about where I was at with it. I found a single, hyper-niche use case where I use it in the SF5 for the barrel mounts because it has a higher softening temperature, but the whole rest of that gun is PA6.

    Thanks for the insight man.

  • Ehehehe. Perhaps.

I'll make a big announcement on it soon, but I wanna capture this momentum for January 1st and push hard for Form 1 cans before I do.

It'll have open signups and I'll be pretty firm about encyclopedic tone. We've never had more than a collection of how-to guides, never a proper wiki.

The Default UI is now Photon

The default UI for the GunCAD Forums is now Photon. This comes as a result of unanimous support for the frontend when I polled for it.

What does this mean for me?

If you are using an app, nothing at all. Just move on, you don't care.

If you are using the web UI (i.e. you're a desktop user), the default UI of the site is now this slicker interface instead of the really simple HTML one. If you want that one back, check out the sidebar or click here and adjust your bookmarks accordingly.

Please report any bugs or issues with the interface here. If you notice weirdness, log out and back in at least once before reporting here.

    I Don't Like X

If you don't like certain parts of the interface -- coloration, collapsed thumbnails, alignment, whatever -- you can customize it by hitting settings on the left.

    The old.reddit UI is Back

GO HERE FOR OLD REDDIT UI: https://old.forum.guncadindex.com/

This UI used to be bugged, with a couple rate-limiting issues among other things. Courtesy of some bugfixes, it's back in action again.

It's called mlmym, and if you ever need the link to it, it's in the sidebar.

If you encounter any bugs or issues with it, please report them here. Note that it might not have all the features the other UIs do as a result of basically just being the Old Reddit interface.

Which UI Should Be the Default?

Running a poll for this on birdsite: https://x.com/theshittinator/status/1997182340561265031

The TL;DR: We have two UIs:

    1. https://forum.guncadindex.com/ - Lemmy-UI. This is the default UI that ships with Lemmy with a custom theme slapped on top of it.
    2. https://p.forum.guncadindex.com/ - Photon. This UI is slick, but it's missing a couple admin features (which isn't a big deal) and had a bug when we first deployed it where new user signups would erroneously get a "token validation error" or something. I don't know if they've fixed it.

The question I want you guys to answer is: Which do you prefer? I assume most people think Photon is slicker, but I could be mistaken.

If most people like Photon, I might give it a shot in the limelight again to see if they've fixed that bug yet.

    GunCAD Index 1.2.0 Released

These last few releases were tiny, itty-bitty things, truly. But this one? We've got a few new features in store. Buckle in, we'll go over it

    Lemmy Integration

The first, biggest thing I'm happy to show off is that we now show discussions below each release. This is a huge thing that was facilitated by our move to Lemmy -- I can now search via a proper API and display the results right there under the listing. Effectively, this is a search result for the name of the release along with any links to it on Odysee, LBRY, or the GunCAD Index. Link to thing

    /r/FOSSCAD Archives Restored to Lemmy

@gsgmfg@fosscad.io did it, the madman. In conjunction with a kind user from the Index's Lemmy instance, he was able to restore almost all of the data from /r/fosscad. There's a bit of a loss in images, but the text -- the oh-so-valuable advice and discourse -- is all there.

And the best part: it's federated between both of our instances. There are now not one but two copies of the data: one local to his instance and one local to mine.

    Find it here: !ark@fosscad.io

  • FOSSCAD @lemmy.ml

    Hello from GunCAD Index!

Hello... lemmitors...? Lemmings? FOSSCAD enthusiasts by another name.

If you're interested in an instance to call home that's guncad top-to-bottom, come check out https://forum.guncadindex.com/ !

(EDIT: If this is out-of-place, I apologize. I needed another relevant forum with which to confirm we had working federation. If this is out of line for your instance, please let me know)

Known Issues (new users please read!)

Well it wouldn't be a software launch if it didn't have problems. I think we've eliminated almost all issues, but for completeness, here's what we had to endure:

The ones that are mostly user error:

    • I only see one post - Make sure you're viewing the Local instance, not just your Subscriptions
    • Invalid Passwords when Creating Accounts - Your password must contain a special character and be a reasonable length -- make sure you're not doing "hunter2" or something

Here are the ones I think I've resolved. Chime in if you see these again:

    • Image uploading failures - Sporadic failures stopped once I bumped the rate limit for image uploads. If it comes back, I'll try a solve at nginx
    • Email validation links not working - This one happened because the Photon frontend (the "Modern" one) can sometimes verify your email twice. The first one succeeds, then the second one fails because you've already verified. If you get this one, you're good, just log in. By switch

:::spoiler A Note on Reddit's Rule Changes

/r/FOSSCAD was banned a while ago, but starting October 9th, Reddit is adjusting its rules such that the following are now verboten:

    • User-to-user and user-to-vendor transactions of firearms and accessories (including things like magazines) where one of them is not a "licensed vendor". This completely destroys /r/GA
